The Bernard family
Haley Mea Bernard, daughter of Dennis and Lyndsey Bernard, seen here on her father’s lap, is four years old. If you ask anyone at the Bonner Springs FD they will tell you she has been a part of the FD family since the day she was born. She was diagnosed with Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia (JMML) last year. The only treatment that has resulted in cures for JMML is a bone marrow transplant. Fortunately, Lyndsey was pregnant with their third child. The doctors were able to use the stem cells from the newborn baby, as they were an exact match for little Haley.Chemotherapy began on December 27, 2012, and the transplant occurred on January 4, 2013.
Haley has had a very good outcome so far and is home now. However, home is in a different place due to Haley’s weakened immune system. The family had to move from their own home due to possible contamination from mold/mildew in the home's crawl space. In addition, the medical procedures and their high deductibles have left them in financial strain.
Dennis is a public works employee for the City of Lawrence and is a volunteer firefighter with the City of Bonner Springs. Dennis has been a valued member of the Bonner Springs FD for 13 years.
